Monica Kraft, MD
Where do you work?
Mount Sinai
What are your research interests?
I am a clinical and translational physician scientist who has published extensively in the area of adult asthma and COPD. Specifically, my research interests include the mechanisms of innate immune dysfunction, inflammation and infection in asthma, as well as evaluation of personalized/precision approaches to asthma therapy through clinical trials.
What scientific achievements are you most proud of?
I discovered the roles of lung tissue inflammation in nocturnal asthma and infection in the pathobiology of asthma, moving our concept of asthma biology beyond mere bronchoconstriction. In addition, I have translated this work to large-scale clinical trials to provide the evidence needed to change asthma care worldwide. My work has been incorporated into international guidelines for asthma diagnosis and treatment. I recently discovered a link between surfactant protein A and asthma, which I am moving forward as an additional therapeutic approach for asthma exacerbations as co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of RaeSedo, Inc.
Who nominated you to join the Collegium?
Donata Vercelli, MD
How has being a member of the Collegium benefited your career?
The interaction with outstanding scientists and the ability to present the work from my research group with feedback have been very beneficial experiences. CIA has also led to additional collaborations which I greatly value.
What is your favorite memory from a past CIA Symposium?
I remember the sense of camaraderie and friendship at the annual gala which I treasure.
What are your hobbies or what do you spend most of your time doing?
I enjoy spending time with my husband and son, and all types of exercise, especially outside whether its hiking, running, cycling or walking my wonderful dog Annie with my husband and son. I also enjoy travel, exploring the sights and experiences of New York City, seeing movies and reading spy novels.
What is something you cannot live without?
Sushi
Is there anything else you would like to share with your fellow CIA members?
I would love if the work we’ve been doing in the lab for 20 years directly benefits a patient one day. That would be extremely gratifying.
